Puerto Rico has agreed to restore gas services to a major American island devastated by Hurricane Maria — and the government is giving oil and gas companies the green light to drill on the territory for the first time since Hurricane Matthew hit.

The deal, announced Wednesday, also has oil and gas companies looking for new ways to access Puerto Rico’s vast, untapped fields for gas and oil, Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello said at a news conference on Tuesday.

Rossello said the agreement includes a pilot project that will see natural gas be shipped via small truck in cargo bays at gas stations and supermarkets in Puerto Rico — a move that could save companies hundreds of millions in fuel costs.

“We’re hoping that this can take off into the rest of the nation by allowing people in our territory to access and consume natural gas in abundance,” he said. “And if we can make that happen, I think natural gas will really go to the ground.”

Rossello said his office also plans to extend a special rule that allows natural gas to be shipped into the state via small trucks for two years, from now on.

“We have no water on the island and we expect to face the worst conditions — extremely severe water shortages, as much as 30 to 40 inches in 20 to 30 days,” Eduardo Padilla said at a news conference.

The state also said that oil and gas wells were in jeopardy and some fuel tankers could be damaged in the storms우리카지노.

The announcement also came after Rossello was invited to sit down with the head of BP Plc at the oil giant’s headquarters in Houston for a meeting to discuss the island’s recovery efforts and to offer the company additional assistance. The president o
